All works (books, pamphlets, maps, atlases, and music) were written pre-1956.

Purpose:
BIP is an extensive bibliographical resource for all books currently published or distributed in the United States.
Authority:
R.R. Bowker is a well-respected publisher of reference materials.
Scope:
The 2007-2008 edition consists of seven volumes divided into: titles, authors, publisher name and wholesale & distributor indexes. There are over 1,854, 150 active titles and more than 3,107, 383 active ISBNs representing more than 72,240 United States publishers.
Format:
Seven volumes of over 6750 pages. Entries are arranged alphabetically.
Reference Sources for Small and Medium-Sized Libraries

Purpose:

Format:
It is a 329 page paperback volume comprised of twenty chapters arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification.

Purpose:
To present a comprehensive listing of the most useful reference sources.
Authority:
Fifty librarian (subject specialists and general reference) from institutions such as Harvard, Columbia and University of California worked in reviewing and compiling the reference sources.
Scope:
15,875 titles of works published in North American (written in English) ranging from the 18th century to 1993.
Format:
The Guide is divided into five sections: General Reference Works, Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, History and Area Studies and Science, Technology, and Medicine. Entries are based on MARC entries cataloged by the Library of Congress.

Purpose:
Provides a comprehensive guide to reference materials focusing on the areas of science, medicine and technology.
Authority:
TNW is following the tradition of John Walford’s classic Guide to Reference Materials.
Scope:
Covers science, technology, and medicine focuses both on print and electronic resources.
Format:
The volume is organized into three main subject parts: science, technology, and medicine. These are divided into subject groupings that are further divided into subject fields.
Public Library Catalog

Purpose:
To serve the needs of public and undergraduate libraries in helping make decisions about weeding their collections. It also provides useful information to acquisitions librarians, reference librarians, and catalogers.
Authority:
Books were selected by experienced librarians representing public library systems across the country.
Scope:
The Catalog lists nonfiction books published in the United States or in Canada or the UnitedKingdom and distributed in the United States. It comprises over 8,000 book titles with multiple subject access and some 1,500 analytical titles.
Format:
The Catalog is divided into two parts: classified catalog and author, title, subject and analytical index.

Book Review Digest
Citation:

Purpose:
BRD provides citations to and excerpts from reviews of juvenile and adult fiction and nonfiction in the English language.
Authority:
Reviews are obtained from a select group of periodicals in the humanities, social sciences and general science published in the United States.
Format:
BDR consists of two sections, the review listings and the subject and title index.
The Columbia Granger’s Index to Poetry in Anthologies

Purpose:
To serve as a comprehensive index to poetry most frequently found in anthologies.
Authority:
Anthologies were chosen by the staff of the Columbia University Press along with literary consultants.
Scope:
The volume locates 81,000 poems, indexes 12,735 authors, and last-line indexes 10,000 of the most frequently anthologized poems.
Format:
Columbia Granger’s is divided into three sections: title, first line, and last line index; author index; and subject index. Each section is arranged alphabetically.
Humanities Index
Citation:

Purpose:
The Humanities Index is a cumulative index to English language periodicals.
Authority:
Journals are selected by the Committee on Wilson Indexes with the American Library Association’s Reference and User Services Association as an advisor.
Scope:
The Index indexes more than 450 periodicals as well as interviews, obituaries, bibliographies, reviews of plays, operas, ballets, dance, musicals, motion pictures, video recordings, television and radio programs, and works of fiction, drama and poetry.
Format:
It is an author and subject index with all entries arranged in one alphabet.
Media Review Digest

Purpose:
MRD is an index and digest to reviews, evaluations, and descriptions of all forms of non-book media appearing in a great variety of periodicals and reviewing services.
Scope:
MRD contains approximately 40,000 citations and cross-references to reviews and descriptions of films, videocassettes, videodiscs, and filmstrips; a total of 139 periodicals and services are indexed. (1989 ed.)
Format:
The volume is divided into: film and video, filmstrips, audio, and miscellaneous. Each section contains an alphabetical listing by title or main entry of all materials reviewed.
Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature

Scope:

The volume is divided into the above-stated six parts that are subdivided into more specific areas of interest.
Chase’s Calendar of Events

Purpose:
To provide a single reference source for calendar dates and authoritative and current information about the various observances throughout the year.
Scope:
Chase’s is 752 pages containing over 12,000 entries.
Format:
Each date contains historical events, birthday, anniversaries, religious/ethnic observances, national/state/local holidays the entries are arranged alphabetically.
Europa World Year Book
Citation:

Purpose:
Europa World Year Book provides a wealth of detailed information on the political, economic, and commercial institutions of the world.
Scope:
Volumes 1 and 2 contain information on over 3,000 international organizations.
Format:
Volume 1 contains a listing of 1,900 international organizations and an alphabetical survey of countries from Afghanistan to Jordan. Volume 2 contains countries from Kazakhstan to Zimbabwe.

Internet Movie Database

Purpose:
It is a resource for anything pertaining to movies or television.
Scope:

Famous First Facts
Citation:

Purpose:
To provide a resource for highlighting important firsts in American society.
Format:
Related articles are grouped together under main subject categories that are arranged alphabetically.
Emily Post Etiquette

Purpose:
To provide guidelines on how to conduct oneself properly in various social/personal/ business situations.
Scope:
Post covers topics ranging from communications to weddings.
Format:
The volume is divided into nine sections: communications, your personal life, your professional life, formalities, entertaining and entertainment, travel & tipping, celebrations & ceremonies, gift, giving & thank-yous, and weddings. Each section is subdivided into a more specific topic.
Whitaker’s Almanack

Purpose:
To provide an extensive overview of government, finances, population, commerce, and general statistics in the United Kingdom and the World.
Scope:
It covers the previous year’s events.
Format:
It is divided into the areas: United Kingdom, The World, The Year 2009, The Year 2007-8, Time and Space, and General Reference. Each area is divided into subdivisions.
The World Almanac and Book of Facts

Purpose:
To provide access to facts in a quick and easy manner.
Scope:
Covers events from the previous year.
Format:
